“All 24 rooms, individually designed… produce the wow factor” – The Times

A very happy New Year to you all from The George in Rye. To all those of you who have visited since we’ve reopened, thank you so much for all your kind and positive feedback. If you haven’t come down yet, then we hope we can tempt you over the course of the coming year!

Valentine’s Day. Those ominous words which to many, spell out overpriced dinners, cutesy greetings cards and people trying to sell you roses past their best. At The George, romance means the following to us: spending the night in a historic and stylishly designed room with the loveliest and most comfy beds there are; seriously good wine; walks along the beach; Cheese Fondue…

OK, the last point may be less conventional, but we reckon its time this delicious dish had a deserved revival, and on Valentine’s Evening the restaurant is going to be serving fondue for two, alongside other delicious edibles from head chef Rod Grossmann. Click here to see the complete menu.

If this sounds like your idea of a splendid time, we’re offering one or two night packages which are available the weekend following Valentine’s Day as well as Wednesday 14th itself. From £160 per person for two nights, your stay will include your room (which will be strewn with rose petals), a half bottle of champagne and chocolates for your arrival, and our special Valentine’s dinner menu. Our top Junior suite boasts a roll-top bath for two and a walk-in shower for two, so be quick if you’d like to stay in this room…

Rye is renowned as a haven for writers, who have both settled here and based their work on the town. Most famously, Henry James spent the last 18 years of his life – during which his most celebrated work was produced – at Lamb House, down the road from The George. The novelist E.F Benson (author of the Mapp and Lucia novels), Radclyffe Hall and playwright John Fletcher are some of the many authors connected with Rye.

For those of you who have a novel in them but don’t know where to start, The George is running the first of two creative-writing days on Saturday 17th February. How to be a Paperback Writer is led by Sophia Bartleet, creative writing tutor at Oxford Brookes University. All you need to bring is a pen and an open mind for one or both of the courses: How to create a character and How to write a plot, all for beginners. These are £30 per workshop (or if you book both, save £10) and also open to non-residents if you’d rather visit Rye for the day. For more details, please contact us on 01797 222 114 or email events@thegeorgeinrye.com.

Best Wishes
