The George in Rye: a hotel for the raffish, languid
and marvellous
You may remember in the fairly recent past a hotel called The George in Rye. We took over the place in 2004, having visited Rye and fallen in love with this elegant, slightly ramshackle Tudor coaching inn.
Though undeniably beautiful and full of character, when we arrived The George was in need of a refurbishment and some care.
We closed the hotel in order to restore it back to its former splendour and are now getting in touch with you - having spent rather a long time immersed in wallpaper samples and paint - to invite you back to The George. We're very happy to say that the rooms, restaurant and bar have just reopened.
Now a cosy hideaway with the emphasis on homeliness and the quirky,
every room at The George has been decorated individually with a mixture of contemporary English arts and crafts, and antique furniture. Comfort, convenience and a pinch of decadence (we're fans of roll-top baths…), but without an astronomical price tag.
Our Dining Room has also re-opened and now boasts a Mediterranean menu from head chef Rod Grossmann, using the best of local ingredients. Not only fish from Rye Bay and celebrated Romney Marsh Lamb, but also English wines and Sussex ales and ciders.
With our current Midweek break, your room rate will include dinner, while Christmas promises to bring feasting, Champagne at the fireside and wintery walks down Rye's magical cobbled lanes and out into the Sussex countryside. Take a look
here for details.
There's lots planned in the coming months: afternoon films with wine and chocolate, supper clubs, and special interest weekend breaks.
