After three years of hard work the new Battle Museum of Local History opened its doors to the public on Monday 28th April 2003.
2000 proved to be very difficult. Costs had risen since the project first started and additional funding had to be found. Once work started on the original old building it was found to require underpinning - an additional £20,000 had to be found. The Heritage Lottery Fund rose to the occasion and granted additional funding, as it was an unforeseen problem. Also, on advice from The Battle Partnership, an application to the newly formed Leader+ (European Union) was made and the museum was one of the first projects to be awarded funds.
Work on the building started in July 2002 and we have been fortunate in an architect, Anthony Sherwin, and building company, George Stone (Hastings) Ltd., who have taken a personal interest in the project. This has meant that the sometimes complex and worrying project has been completed on schedule, to the high standard required and with the minimum of frustration.
